What is the Ask Me scheme?

The Ask Me scheme is a community response to domestic abuse and one strand of the Women’s Aid Change That Lasts project. Please find more information about Change That Lasts here.

The Ask Me scheme offers a free two-day training course to inspire community members to become an ‘Ask Me ambassador’. The Ask Me ambassadors will share the learning with their friends, family, neighbours, colleagues and challenge myths, stereotypes and victim-blaming attitudes in their community. They will learn how to respond to a disclosure and about the expert services they can signpost people to for help. The scheme is open to anyone who works, lives, studies or volunteers in the Brighton and Hove area, or has contact with communities in any shape or form. This includes bar staff to hairdressers, reception staff to HR teams, dentists, pharmacists, retail staff and community groups.

Many survivors are not engaged formally with services at all, and their opportunities to disclose abuse are limited to the community around them. Often, the first person that a survivor speaks to is a friend, family member or neighbour. But lack of understanding and fear can prevent people from responding in a helpful and appropriate way.

The Ask Me scheme will break the silence about domestic abuse within a community and remove the barriers that make it hard for survivors to tell others about their experiences.

RISE is operating the Ask Me scheme in Brighton and Hove. RISE offers community Ask Me training in Brighton and Hove throughout the year and can offer targeted Ask Me training to organisations, both according to demand.

ROLE SUMMARY:

To provide administrative support to the Community Engagement Lead in operating the Ask Me scheme in Brighton and Hove. Duties may include engaging participants in the scheme, maintaining records of participants and the Ask Me mailing list, organising ambassador network meet-ups and administering the evaluation of the scheme.

Hours of Volunteering:

Ranging between 4 to 8 hours a week. There is flexibility with these hours as the workload will be dependent on training dates

GENERAL DUTIES:

  • Engaging participants on to the scheme;
  • Maintain the RISE Ask Me training participant list and mailing list;
  • Monitor the Ask Me email address;
  • Administer the evaluation of the Ask Me scheme, which includes sharing the data tracking form with local ambassadors on a quarterly basis, and subsequently collecting and analysing the data captured;
  • Support in the organisation and co-facilitation of six weekly Ask Me ambassador network meet-ups;
  • Support in the ongoing engagement of the Ask Me Ambassador network;
  • General administration support;
  • Any other duties as required and relevant to the needs of the scheme.

PERSONAL SKILLS & QUALITIES REQUIRED:

  • To have completed, or be willing to complete, the Ask Me training
  • General IT skills and a working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Excel software.
  • Some administration experience would be an advantage.
  • Some experience in quantitative data processing would be an advantage.
  • Some experience in managing an online group would be an advantage.
  • Ability to be flexible and work according to the needs of the Ask Me scheme.
  • Be prepared to attend supervision.
  • Be able to commit to regular voluntary work for RISE.
  • At all times you will be expected to protect the safety and security of services, service users, staff, volunteers and buildings, and the confidentiality of records and other information.
  • Acknowledge and actively support the rights of women, children and young people who have experienced domestic violence.
