Our History

Founded in 1994 we started life as the Women’s Refuge Project.

We were based at Brighton Women’s Centre. Our ‘helpline’ was two women in a room with one landline telephone between them.

By 2007 we were running two refuges, a busy helpline and ran a range of different services. Our name no longer reflected who we were and what we did. We consulted with service users, funders, staff and stakeholders and in 2008 we rebranded to RISE.

RISE stands for Refuge, Information, Support and Education. Our vision is freedom from abuse and violence. We now have staff in community locations across Brighton & Hove and partner with abuse charities in East Sussex.

Our History
You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I'll rise. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise.
