RISE mourns the loss of Tina Turner, an iconic figure in the music industry and a survivor of domestic abuse

Posted on May, 2023

Her powerful voice and electrifying performances captivated audiences worldwide but it was her unwavering courage in breaking the silence around domestic abuse that truly set her apart.

It was this courage and her music that inspired RISE supporters ten years ago to create the One Billion Women Rising Flashmob in this video.

One Billion Women Rising, a campaign to raise awareness to end gender-based violence, brings together people from all walks of life to unite and demand an end to the violence faced by women and girls worldwide.

The Brighton Dance Flash Mob, in collaboration with RISE, orchestrated this powerful dance performance as part of the  One Billion Women Rising campaign depicting both strength and respect through Tina Turner's best-known music. We want to honour her memory by sharing this video, showing a community of survivors and local people celebrating their power and helping to end violence and abuse.

Tina Turner's life was a testament to the triumph of the human spirit. Behind her vibrant stage persona, she was a survivor who endured pain and suffering. In her autobiography, "I, Tina," co-authored with Kurt Loder, Tina shared her harrowing experiences, revealing the abuse she endured from her former husband, Ike Turner. By breaking the silence, and addressing her own painful past, Tina emboldened survivors around the world to speak up and seek help, fostering a global conversation that continues to this day.
